Free college education has been a topic of debate over the last decade. As people adapt to the success of the free high school and elementary education, the discussion has now progressed to free college education. Supporters of free college education argue for its many benefits, such as more access to higher education institutions for all persons, especially the eligible. Opposes to free college education focus on the ramifications of free college education, such as losing its significance hence no motive for students to study. Recent development in the debate has seen the new United States President Joe Biden and some leaders join the supporters of a free community college education. This document discusses why community college should be free to the eligible supporting President Biden’s notion.
Despite the president\’s stalled plans for free community college education, some states have launched initiatives supporting free community college education. Community college education should be free to increase access to higher education institutions (Douglas-Gabriel, 2022). Unfortunately, many students delay going to college or do away with the option because of tuition expenses. Tuition expenses have developed student debt into an alarming national problem. As of January 2022, the student debt increase is rapidly outpacing the cost of rising tuition fees by 353.8 percent (Dufour, 2021). Students who manage to get into college graduate with significant debts that sometimes delay major life events such as getting home. Community college must be made free to reduce the debt burden and the number of students foregoing college education.
Critics might argue that the funding for free college education might strain other sectors. However, college tuition programs that are publicly funded eventually yield the funds back. This means that by offering students free education, they are empowered with the tools necessary to find better-paying jobs than they would without a college degree (Douglas-Gabriel, 2022). The economy is significantly boosted, easing concerns about financing public education. Free community college ensures a more educated workforce in the United States. The United States stands to benefit from taxes and the economy from a more educated workforce. The more the college graduates earn, the more taxes they will pay to the government; hence the money can be plowed back to improve the free college systems.
A free community college will also encourage more students to attend. As mentioned earlier, many students forego college education due to cost. A free community college will effectively encourage more students to join the programs, especially those forgoing because of costs associated with college. Additionally, students\’ well-being is considered with free college education because some students have school-related stress due to worrying about not having tuition fees for the next year (Marken, 2019). The free college will help students focus on studies without the stress of dropping out midway. Studies reveal that free college education improves the graduation rate. Studies show that free college education has increased college graduation at two-year levels, with more students graduating than without the free college programs (Strempel and Handel, 2021). To compete in the global economy, employees learn that they need at least two years of college to thrive in an economy driven by information. A free college education makes it happen for people; hence more students will enroll and complete it.
To sum up, community college should be free to the eligible because its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. It is more beneficial for the government, the economy, and the people if more people go to college. A free college education will increase the number of graduates; hence the nation will have a better-educated workforce. People will also have chances of getting higher-paying jobs and competing in the global job market. The cost of financing a free college education can be plowed back through the taxes of more college graduates earning better pay; hence it is self-sufficient and does not strain other sectors.
