Labour laws are laws that mediate between employing entities, trade unions, the government, and workers. Labour laws are important because they are developed to protect as well as empower workers. They ensure that the relationship between employer and employee is supervised. This allows for both parties to be accountable for their actions. The employer and the employee have a natural hierarchy. Labour laws ensure that this source of power for the employer is not exploited. However, some people are of the perceptions are not fair for various reasons. This document discusses why labour laws are fair.
Labour laws are fair for various reasons. One is that they ensure proper workers’ classification. A significant employers do not pay payroll taxes because of their independent contractors. Labour laws prevent the employers from classifying their employees wrongly as independent contractors to prevent paying payroll taxes. This ensures that employees do not strain from taxes that employers should pay for the employees’ insurance compensation. It also ensures that employees are liable for the minimum wage. As such labour laws are fair because they ensure the employer does not exploit the employee through wrong classification.
Labour laws also ensure that children are protected from joining the workforce. Employment of children under the age of 14 is prohibited by the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. This ensures that employers do not utilize or exploit children by listing them in the workforce. The law also dictates the working hours for children above the age of fourteen but below 17. The law is fair because it protects the rights of children who can be exploited by the employers since they do not know their rights.
